The Mazaron

An Established Art Centre

The Bulletin, 1969

The Mazaron Art Galleries in Ross Street, Paceville, is rapidly achieving its aim - to become a rendezvous for modern Art Lovers and the picture buying public. Following the success of their initial collection and the individual exhibition of Mary de Piro's work, (during which the gallery was visited by H.R.H. Prince Charles and H.R.H. Princess Anne), the Directors have now provided an increasingly interested public with yet another varied exhibition centred around the works of Anthony Christian-Howard.

The Bulletin, 1969

The fact that Christian-Howard should exhibit in a Gallery that has only been open for a few months is in itself a remarkable achievement - his last exhibition in London earlier this year at the Duchess of St. Albans' Upper Grosvenor Galleries was considered by leading art critics to be one of the most successful in London for many years. Apart from Christian-Howard's work, there are currently paintings by Esprit Barthlet, who recently sent a picture to Cape Kennedy, Jorge Stever, who once lived in Malta and may be returning in the Autumn. There are also three new pictures by Mary de Piro and wood carvings by Gabriel Caruana. Preparing to exhibit at Mazaron is Cremona.

The Mazaron is open to the Public from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There is also a roof garden and bar for the convenience of patrons, artists and art lovers that is rapidly becoming very popular.

Anthony Paul Christian Howard

He was born in England on 24th October 1945, the third son of an unhappy marriage, he left home as an 11 year old on the complete break up of home. Educated at a state School by day, he worked in the evenings to help pay for his keep.

From the age of 10 he studied Anatomy Drawing at the Victoria and Albert Museum under the guidance of the Keeper Mr. Charles Gibbs-Smith. Although only 10 he was at the same time studying the technique of the old masters at the National Gallery and it was here that he made his highly publicised perfect copy of a Phillips Wouwermans battle picture (The National Gallery had never before or indeed never since allowed a student under 18 to study or copy any of their paintings). He married Susan Gifford on his 19th birthday and together with his wife spent the following two years, 1965-1966, painting in Rome. From Rome they moved to Morocco for a year during this time he used the studio in the famous Churchill/Roosevelt Villa.

In April this year he held a most successful exhibition in London's Upper Grosvenor Galleries, this included his highly controversial Conversation Piece of the Queen Mother's Trainer, Mr. Peter Caselet and his family.

Apart from the Mazaron Art Galleries his work can be found in many private collections including:
Hugh Chisholm - New York
Braga - New York
Ogden Phipps - Florida
H.R.H La Fatima Zhara - Morocco
Prince Edmondo Ruspoli - Rome

Previous to the Mazaron, Anthony Christian held his first one-man exhibition of his drawings at the Upper Grosvenor Gallery in London. After the highly successful Mazaron Exhibition, Anthony Christian returned to London and exhibited a second time in Mayfair's Upper Grosvenor Gallery, this time with a collection of landscapes oils and was very well received.
