The New York Still Lifes

New York, 1985

In the mid eighties I was living in New York. Since my arrival there in 1980, the subject which happened to inspire me the most was still life. Apart from a few portraits of people I picked up on the street whose faces so excited me that I paid them to sit for me, I painted literally hundreds of still lifes over those years. The crescendo of that inspiration was reached between 1985 and 1987, when I made several experiments with the genre that please me to this day, including the "Worship Series".
