God's Brush, Volume 1

- The Child that Art Made

God's Brush

This beautifully written autobiography tells of Anthony Christian's early life, of a child's determination to pursue his art in the face of a tyrannical headmaster who almost daily threatened, "Bend over boy, I'm going to beat the artist out of you!" It is a touching, revealing and riveting story of a boy who became a unique and truly great artist.

God's Brush is a sometimes comic, sometimes tragic account of a child growing up, being abused at home and tortured at school whilst devoting all his energies to an Art he was born with and in which he had total faith. Christian captures the very essence of an era and we learn of his life in the London of the 50s and 60s, where he adored - and kissed - the beautiful girls that danced in the city's jazz clubs and dives. We learn of his sexual awakenings and the sleazy, rich, homosexual side of London. The images conjured by Christian's pen are as brilliantly alive as anything he has created as an artist. It is as much a pleasure to the mind to read as it is for the eyes to see his wonderful paintings and drawings.

God's Brush

One of the beautiful things about this book is that we know in advance that all the promises made in it, between the author at the age of ten and the greatest Old Masters of our culture, were in fact fullfilled. The child did indeed become a Master in the grand manner, and this first in a planned nine-volume autobiography tells us exactly when and how the seeds were sown that would grow into one of the great artists of the day, known and admired across four continents.
